Insulation
There are two major downsides to traditional fiberglass insulation. It is not a
resource efficient product and it has been linked to several types of health
complications... and let’s not forget the itch.
Fiberglass insulation is made
using virgin materials. The production of glass is also fairly energy-intensive
due to the high temperatures involved. As far as your health is concerned, most
fiberglass insulation products use phenol formaldehyde-based glue as a binder;
these should be avoided because formaldehyde off-gases, contributing to poor
indoor air quality. Fiberglass fibers are also friable and can become airborne,
particularly during installation. These fibers can be inhaled, and some health
experts claim that this particulate matter is carcinogenic.
A healthier, more resource
efficient alternative to fiberglass insulation is cotton insulation. UltraTouch
